Archie is a lifelong resident of Northern Virginia and currently owns and lives in a condo in Falls Church with his cat, Bandito. He is a talented singer and enjoys singing “to the enjoyment of anyone who wants to listen.” He is active in his community, including in his church, Mount Salvation Baptist in Arlington.
Archie had a stroke in 2008, which led to his retirement and further health complications. He reached out to Habitat DC-NOVA because his bathtub had rotted and he needed modifications to make his bathroom functional and accessible. We installed a walk-in shower with multiple grab bars, a shower chair, a handheld showerhead and grab bar clamp and a non-slip bath mat. We also replaced his toilet and sink with ADA-compliant models. Finally, we installed a wooden rail in his hallway, which had been a fall risk for him in the past.
Archie shared that he’s delighted with the repairs – “I just keep smiling.” Older adults like Archie deserve to feel safe in their homes. By making a making a gift today, you are ensuring older adults can age in place within their communities while maintaining their independence and quality of life.
