At Habitat DC-NOVA, we engage thousands of volunteers annually to help create affordable homes for families in our community. Regardless of your background or interests, there’s a meaningful way for you to contribute! Your time and effort are essential to our mission. By volunteering with home construction, you enable us to provide housing at prices families can afford. Beyond building, there are many other ways to get involved!
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, whether you’re seeking regular involvement or interested in special projects. For questions about volunteering, contact our team at volunteer@habitatdcnova.org.
Volunteering as an individual
Open build days
We ask volunteers to commit to the entire day, and we will provide all the tools and safety equipment needed. Open build days are posted as they become available, and volunteers are notified via our listserv. Sign up today!
Volunteers of all skill levels who are at least 16 years of age are welcome to give their time. Open build days provide a hands-on experience where you can learn new skills and contribute to meaningful projects!
Become a volunteer crew leader
Volunteer crew leaders are the backbone of our construction program. They commit to volunteering at least two to three times a month and play a crucial role in teaching and supervising small groups of volunteers with various skill levels.
As a crew leader, you will not only gain valuable leadership experience but also make a significant impact on our projects and the community. If you have a passion for construction and mentoring, this role is perfect for you!
Lend a hand at our ReStores and support affordable housing
Volunteers help accept donations, organize inventory, assist customers with finding items, and much more! Whether you enjoy interacting with customers or prefer organizing behind the scenes, there’s an opportunity for you at our ReStores.
Our ReStores are open Monday-Saturday and are located in Alexandria, Chantilly, and Herndon. The proceeds from ReStore sales directly support our work in providing affordable housing, and volunteers help ensure our stores provide an excellent shopping experience. If you are interested in coordinating a group volunteer event at the ReStore, please get in touch with Mahnoor Zafar at mahnoor.zafar@habitatdcnova.org. We can accommodate 10 volunteers per 2-hour shift.
Assist as an office volunteer
Habitat DC-NOVA often works with volunteers who assist with administrative tasks in our office. This includes helping with mailings, database updates, and other organizational support.
Shifts are available Monday – Friday, and responsibilities include regular office tasks, small ongoing projects, data entry, filing, and other administrative support as needed. If you are detail-oriented and enjoy office work, this is a great way to provide support! Please reach out to Rachel Jones at rachel.jones@habitatdcnova.org if you are interested.
Group volunteer opportunities
For groups, whether corporate or community-based, build days are an excellent way to foster teamwork and make a difference. Build days are held Wednesday through Saturday all year round for groups of up to 10 volunteers.
We provide all materials, training, and supervision, so no previous construction experience is required. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Our build-day schedule fills up quickly, so we recommend requesting to schedule your day at least 3 months in advance.
Groups may also participate in a session together at our ReStores. Reach out to rachel.jones@habitatdcnova.org to schedule a time to volunteer!
